The word “hypoallergenic” is becoming an increasingly popular term, especially for people prone to allergic sensitivities. But, what does hypoallergenic really mean and why is it important inHappy Little Camper products?
Defining Hypoallergenic
Hypoallergenic is a term first coined in a1953 cosmetic campaign as a claim that certain cosmetics, lotions, or products that come in contact with the skin caused fewer allergies. Currently, the U.S. government doesn’t have a specific standard as to what qualifies a product to be hypoallergenic nor does it require any testing to be done. In 1975, theUSFDA attempted to place regulations on what would pass as hypoallergenic, but two well-known cosmetic companies fought back striking down the provision as invalid.
The Popularity of Natural Ingredients
The popularity ofnatural ingredients in products is on the rise. Despite hypoallergenic not having a strict definition and not being regulated by the U.S. government, many companies take ingredients in their products and skinallergies very seriously.
