If you’re a new mom, you’re likely Googling and reading everything you can find online that concerns your little one. The first few months of your baby’s life is foundational because this is when language, cognitive development, and more begins.

During the infant stage is when their immune system is most fragile. That’s why health care professionals promotehandwashing before picking up a baby. It’s important to consider what’s touching your baby’s sensitive skin. Especially when it comes to diapers, wipes and lotions, which may contain harmful parabens. And why you might consider switching to paraben-freenatural baby hygiene products if you haven’t already.

What Are Parabens?

Parabens are chemicals you typically find in processed foods with preservatives and personal care products to prevent bacteria and microbe growth. These preservative-types of paraben compounds are also in cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and even non-natural baby products. Whereas, natural baby diapers and wipes, such asHappy Little Camper, are paraben-free and dermatologically tested to prevent allergic reactions and skin irritations since ingredients are non-toxic. We choose to use a natural preservative source instead that’s better-for-baby.

Parabens & Health Concerns

There are side effects to parabens, which can enter the body through the skin or ingested by way of food. Since it only takes 26 seconds for a chemical to be absorbed through the skin, and enter the bloodstream, it doesn’t take long for parabens to enter the body. Parabens are absorbed in the digestive system as well.

Parabens are known to cause the following health concerns:

  • Endocrine Disruption: Parabens mimic estrogen in the body, potentially causing hormonal imbalance.

  • Cancer: Parabens mixed with other estrogenic chemicals can cause malignant melanoma to develop. A study also found a link betweenbreast cancer tumors and parabens putting even young babies at risk from an early age.

  • Developmental and Reproductive Toxicity: Parabens tend to cause lower sperm production causing androgen disruption. It also causes hormonal imbalance in females because of its estrogenic effects in the body. Too much estrogen can cause fertility issues later on in life because it disrupts ovulation.

  • Genotoxic: Exposure to parabens for pregnant women can affect fetal organs because of genotoxicity where parabens directly affect the DNA and chromosome cells in an unborn fetus.

Choosing Natural Baby Hygiene Products

Since the FDA does not mandate diaper companies to disclose ingredients in their diapers, at the end of the day, you really don’t know what’s touching your baby’s skin. This is concerning considering anewborn’s skin is 40 to 60 percent thinner than an adult. Already, our skin is our thinnest and largest organ. Therefore, a baby’s highly sensitive skin quickly intakes chemicals which directly enters their bloodstream, potentially harming fragile organs.
